Biya missing in action

At a moment of unusual diplomatic glory and with another term in sight, Cameroon’s 91-year-old ruler has disappeared from public view

Paul Biya has not been seen in public since leaving Beijing on 8 September after attending the Forum on China-Africa Co-operation (FOCAC). Government sources say Cameroon’s 91-year-old ruler, who was due in New York last week at the United Nations General Assembly debate, is sick and undergoing medical treatment in Paris or Geneva. The president had engaged in a recent flurry of international activities, attending the Paris Olympics opening ceremony in July; speaking at the 80th anniversary of Débarquement de Provence, commemorating African soldiers’ First World War contribution in the south of France alongside President Emmanuel Macron in August; then shuttling to Beijing.
