Jockeying for position

With presidential elections two years away, ambitious politicians in the ruling party are manoeuvring to inherit Ouattara's mantle

'You can't be in government and in opposition at the same time. You must choose.' Joël N'Guessan, one of the ruling Rassemblement des républicains (RDR) Vice-Presidents, thus addressed his party's junior partner in government, the Parti démocratique de Côte d'Ivoire (PDCI) in early January. At issue was preparation for the forthcoming local elections, but the remark says much about the relationship between the two main parties in government. Neither party in the Rassemblement des houphouëtistes pour la démocratie et la paix (RHDP) governing coalition can yet decide whether to contest the presidential election, due in 2020, together or separately.
