The military ousting of Gbagbo will have repercussions across Africa

The armed eviction of Laurent Gbagbo from the Ivorian presidency by a coalition of opposition, United Nations and French forces together with the organisation of national elections in Nigeria make this one of the most momentous weeks in West African politics for a decade or more. The two events are strongly linked.It was Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan’s insistence, as Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas) that Gbagbo would have to leave power – by the use of ‘legitimate force’ if necessary – that laid the groundwork for the denouement in Abidjan on 11 April.
