Crisis summit as insurgents head south

A deadly attack on Côte d'Ivoire focused the attention of President Macron and regional leaders in Nouakchott

The regional summit in the Mauritanian capital on 30 June started with a note of collective self-congratulation sounded by President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani speaking of reinforcements for Operation Barkhane and a more coherent command structure of the regional G5 Sahel force. Reality quickly crept in with Ghazouani admitting that none of this was enough to turn the tide against the jihadist insurgents that are pressing southwards from the heart of the Sahel.
