Soro has phone trouble

The former rebel leader is a problem for the President, who may now have the means to dispense with his disreputable ally

The Speaker of the Ivorian Parliament, former rebel leader and ex-Prime Minister Guillaume Soro, made a lot of telephone calls to the men responsible for September's attempted coup in Burkina Faso. Recordings were leaked on to the internet. Some of the calls were to Djibril Yipènè Bassolé, a Burkinabè Gendarmerie General, Foreign Minister and earlier Security Minister under the then President Blaise Compaoré. Bassolé is now in a military prison in Ouagadougou on suspicion of taking part in the attempted putsch.
