'Cruel and inhumane'

Khartoum has reacted angrily to criticism of the cross-amputation of Adam el Muthna, 30, who had his right hand and left foot cut off last month after being convicted of armed robbery. Huddud punishments, including amputation for theft and stoning to death for adultery, had been largely on hold since the peace process began with South Sudan. They started under 1983’s ‘September laws’, when Hassan el Turabi was President Ja’afar Nimeiri’s Attorney General.
