Running on empty

The offensives by the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and the brave but shambolic Transitional National Council fighters show no sign of overwhelming Colonel Moammar el Gadaffi’s forces. Fuel starvation is the best prospect for removing the regime. A successful counterattack on 2 August by Gadaffi’s troops against the rebel advance on Zlitan, east of Tripoli, shows the regime’s military resilience after five months of ground war and NATO bombardment.
