Trades unions are mounting their toughest challenge to ZANU-PF since Independence

Zimbabwe's trades unionists cannot expect the landslide that their colleagues in Zambia's Movement for Multi-Party Democracy scored against President Kenneth Kaunda in 1991. Although bad, conditions in Zimbabwe haven't yet reached Zambian proportions and the ruling party is far more resourceful and coherent than Kaunda's United National Independence Party. ZANU-PF is promising constitutional reform and - thanks to the International Monetary Fund and a new US$200 million loan - has more money to fund some pre-election promises next year (AC Vol 40 No 16).
