Extractive pains

Addax Petroleum, the Swiss-based oil company acquired by China’s Sinopec in August 2009, is the latest firm to enter into a dispute with Gabon as President Ali Bongo Ondimba’s government re-evaluates its options in the extractive sector. Addax is engaged in a lose-lose battle with Libreville over the findings of an audit of Gabon’s oil sector. The government has also let it be known that talks are continuing with Chinese investors about the proposed Bélinga iron-ore mine and that it wants a complete renegotiation of the contract for the concession.
