Jail to the chief

Personal and political rivalries are helping ex-President Frederick Chiluba's defence

Zambia's constitution provides that the Director of Public Prosecutions cannot be sacked or removed from office until his conduct has been investigated by a tribunal of judges. So President Levy Mwanawasa's attempt to sack the DPP, Mukelebai Mukelebai (AC Vol 45 No 1), was condemned by state advocates, the Law Association of Zambia and other civic and religious bodies. Mukelebai is accused of conniving with ex-President Frederick Chiluba, who is on trial for corruption and theft of public funds, to sabotage the cases in court.
