Route to the sea

The government is getting nervous about Afars: their territory covers its main route to the sea and Eritrea's port of Assab. Military action in 1996 failed to break the Afar Revolutionary Democratic Unity Front (ARDUF) and its Ugugumo (Revolution) militia. The ruling Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front's surrogate party, the Afar People's Democratic Organisation, won 1995's disputed elections but failed to establish control, despite help from EPRDF appointees and troops.
