Grim down south

Peace appears to be returning to the M'zab region (capital Ghardaïa) of southern Algeria where communal violence stoked tension in the run-up to April's presidential election. The clashes between the long-established Ibadite population (widely known as Mozabites) and the Chaamba and other more recent arrivals who follow the Malekite rite of Islam observed across the rest of Algeria, contributed in mid-October to an unprecedented strike by the national police force.
