Poll ends in farce

Banda’s attempt to cancel the election produced political turmoil and brought the country to a standstill

President Joyce Banda pressed the self-destruct button on her public image at home and in the wider world when she tried to annul the 20 May presidential election. Disregarding the constitution, she tried to cancel the polls when it became clear that she was running a distant third behind her arch-rival Peter Mutharika, for the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), and Lazarus Chakwera, for the Malawi Congress Party (MCP). As Africa Confidential went to press, her People’s Party (PP) stood fourth in the parliamentary vote.
