Joining up security in the Sahel

Jobs for young men and good liaison across borders are vital to effective anti-jihadist action. But there are as many obstacles as there are initiatives

Regional and international moves to resist the jihadists – and to stifle their appeal – in the Sahel and Sahara regions are proliferating but enjoying far from smooth progress. To succeed, the momentum must be maintained and, crucially, committees and joint bodies must complement each other. The European Union – now a crucial player on the economic and military fronts – is discreetly promoting the role of the so-called 'G5' initiative launched in February by the Presidents of Mauritania, Burkina Faso, Mali, Chad and Niger as a keystone of regional efforts.
