Sudan

Undermined

Contrary to our article in AC Vol 38 No 25, Sudan is a signatory of the international treaty banning anti-personnel landmines (APMs) agreed in Ottawa in December. However, Khartoum has received recent shipments of APMs (these are Iranian-manufactured copies of Russian models). Evidence from southern Sudan, the Nuba Mountains and the north-east confirms that the National Islamic Front government has deployed APMs since it said it would ban them at the first Ottawa meeting a year earlier.
