Flare-up in the north

The spate of Islamist violence in northern Mali early this month confirms the warnings of French military and United Nations peacekeepers that the jihadists who had melted away rather than confront French and African Union forces in January and February would resurface later (AC Vol 54 No 8, The campaign stretches out). Recent weeks have brought a suicide bombing in Timbuktu, in which four people died (including the two bombers), a fire-fight with French troops that left ten militants dead, a brief mortar bombardment of Gao’s northern fringe and the destruction of a small bridge at Bentia near the Nigerien border.
