Ibori treasure hunt to go on

The ex-governor fraudster is going to make the Crown work for his loot. Now, a ‘retrial’ will investigate his assets fully in 2014

The process of deciding how much of ex-Delta State Governor James Ibori’s assets the Crown will confiscate will now continue in what promises to be high courtroom drama in the new year. Judge Anthony Pitts said that a ‘retrial’ of the assets issue was necessary so that a full investigation of the convicted fraudster and money-launderer’s wealth could be conducted. Since Ibori pleaded guilty in 2012, a full investigation of his ill-gotten gains was not carried out. Bizarrely, he claims the Crown still needs to prove that he really owns the assets he pleaded guilty to obtaining with the proceeds of fraud and laundered money (AC Vol 54 No 20, Ibori's loot at stake).
