A bumpy ride to the polls

A fraught registration of electors before the local polls and growing civil society interest compound Renamo’s dispute with Frelimo

Civil society, the media and all Mozambique’s political parties are heavily engaged in scrutinising and politicking over the new electoral register. The register should be complete by the end of July and in use for the local elections on 20 November; it will also be the basis of next year’s general elections. Ten new municipalities were added shortly before registration began, bringing the total to 53. Each has district election commissioners charged with registering electors. More than 2,000 officials trained for the task are ready to guarantee the process.
