Presiding over billion-dollar budgets and assured of immunity in office, everything changes for state governors when they retire

The former Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, does not bother with false modesty. Neither does he demur at the description of himself as patron of Nigeria’s democratic opposition and a future presidential candidate. He is 59, young by local political standards, and he has helped to develop the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) into a credible national opposition party from a regional group serving the interests of the south-west and the Yoruba people.
