Power cuts without responsibility

Chaotic energy policy causes lengthy power cuts – and urban unrest

It is a symbol of the politics behind Senegal’s energy crisis. The North Korean-built African Renaissance monument on the hill above the darkened capital was bathed in light. Below it, as a power cut reigned on the night of 27 June, activists in Dakar set up burning barricades, overturned vehicles belonging to the state electricity board, the Société nationale d’éléctricité du Sénégal, and wrecked Sénélec’s offices.
