Job creation and social services would be government’s top political
measures, said Finance Minister Pravin
Jamnadas Gordhan in his budget speech on 24 February. He warned
that without cooperation over economic issues, South Africa might
suffer a popular rebellion like those in North Africa. Those troubles,
he said, were ‘about allowing inequality to grow, allowing joblessness
to grow, about a state that doesn’t actually perform, about a minority
that accumulates things for itself.’
