An international court accuses President Omer el Beshir but he has some unlikely defenders

The International Criminal Court's bid to put President Omer Hassan Ahmed el Beshir on trial for genocide is the sternest test yet for the emerging system of international justice. A wave of hostility has followed ICC Prosecutor Luis Moreno Ocampo's 14 July application for an arrest warrant on ten counts of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity in Darfur (AC Vol 49 No 15). At the United Nations Security Council this week, Libya and South Africa scrambled to scupper the case. Few are debating the issues at stake or whether Field Marshal Omer is culpable.
