Hichilema’s anti-corruption plan in disarray after claims against senior figures

Critics say politically-connected business people are suborning senior officials at the Anti-Corruption Commission

Angered by a raft of allegations against senior officials, President Hakainde Hichilema has dissolved the board of the country’s Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). It follows the resignation on 16 July of the Commission’s Director General, Thom Shamakamba, who was publicly accused of corruption by O’Brien Kaaba, a member of the board. The row comes at an awkward time for Hichilema as his government is trying to draw in more investment in critical minerals such as copper and cobalt but is facing mounting local criticism.
