Guinea

Through a glass very darkly

Closely watching the succession in Conakry are West African presidents, warlords and diplomats. Their central calculation is that what's good for Liberia's exiled warlord Charles Taylor will be bad for Guinea. Although they differ on details, recent reports on arms trafficking and mercenary recruitment indicate that some fighters formerly under the control of Taylor and his ally, Burkina Faso's President Blaise Compaoré, still roam the region un-demobilised despite United Nations' efforts in Liberia.
