How to supply electricity in the long and short term is possibly the most pressing of all South Africa's economic problems and a locus of conflict between statist policies and neo-liberalism in the ruling African National Congress. It is where President Cyril Ramaphosa has recently made his boldest interventions yet in the hope of preventing another round of disastrous power cuts. Much depends on Ramaphosa's key relationship with his Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Gwede Mantashe.
