Battle lines in the capital

President Farmajo refuses to leave office at the end of his term and the opposition has taken to the streets

If President Mohamed Abdullah Mohamed 'Farmajo' does not meet the opposition protesting his authoritarianism half-way, there are fears that splits in the security forces could lead to a return to civil war. His term of office formally ended on 8 February, but he will not leave and is still scheming to stay on. The opposition is having none of it. The coalition of all the presidential candidates mobilising against Farmajo – the Council of Presidential Candidates (CPC) – took to the streets of Mogadishu on 19 February and promised to march again every Friday until he goes.
