Rivals fight for control of Sirte

A test of strength over Gadaffi’s home town and local oil assets threatens to become a regional war pitting Turkey against Egypt

The conflict in Libya started as a civil war, became a proxy war, and is mutating again as it reaches a potential new watershed. With battle lines now drawn up around Sirte, home town of the former dictator Moammar el Gadaffi, and Jufra airbase, 220 kilometres further south, the conflict is on the brink of becoming a regional war pitting Turkey against Egypt.
