New chief, old battles

President Buhari's top aide Ibrahim Gambari faces an array of rival interests trying to shape the government's direction

In the best traditions of international bureaucracy, Ibrahim Gambari, 75, has been consulting widely but quietly as he acclimatises to his new role as President Muhammadu Buhari's chief of staff. Appointed on 12 May, Gambari, who spent 20 years in New York, first as Abuja's ambassador to the United Nations and then with the UN itself, believes he can bolster the capacity of the President's office to push through Buhari's policies, many of which are threatened by the coronavirus pandemic and political infighting in the government. It will be a tough battle.
