The figures don’t add up

The opposition makes political capital from the gap between foreign plaudits for the economy and daily realities of corruption and job losses

Not all Kenyans seem to know it but it has been a tremendous few years for the economy, at least according to the World Bank and International Monetary Fund. In March, the Bank published a glowing report on Kenya's role as a growth centre in East Africa and lauded the country's elevation to number 108 in its global business rankings from 129 in 2014 following several legal and bureaucratic changes. Meanwhile, the Mo Ibrahim Foundation ranks Kenya as one of the most improved countries in its governance index. Diplomats in Nairobi refer to the government as one of the most business-oriented ever, an accolade that cuts both ways.
