China Union angers locals and workers

China Union is embroiled in land-rights disputes as it struggles to rehabilitate the Bong iron-ore mines and begin exports (China Union under fire in Bong County). In 2009, the private Chinese company won rights to a 66,000-hectare concession 80 kilometres north of Monrovia, the capital. The area holds 304 million tonnes of iron ore with a 36.5% iron content. At the time, steel prices were plummeting and President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf’s government’s haste to sign the deal weakened its position at the negotiating table.
