The Nuba are caught in the middle but no one has asked them what they want

All eyes are on the south and east in expectation of major fighting between the National Islamic Front government and the opposition National Democratic Alliance. Yet also crucial is the front in the Nuba Mountains, a remote area of some 48,000 square kilometres (about the size of Scotland) forming the traditional 'buffer zone' between north and south. About a third of a million Nuba live under SPLA rule, with another two-thirds of a million in government-held areas of South Kordofan, at least 100,000 of them in NIF 'peace camps'.
