Surprise guests

President Moi says relations with the USA are warming but economic aid remains on hold

A surprise guest turned up at the United States’ Independence Day festivities in Nairobi’s Ruaraka suburb on 4 July: President Daniel Arap Moi. His presence reflected his blossoming relationship with US Ambassador Prudence Bushnell, which is in sharp contrast to the bitterness between the President and US ambassadors of recent years. One of Moi’s aides accused a particularly critical Ambassador, Smith Hempstone (1989-94), of being a ‘slave trader’. Bushnell hopes to stave off political chaos by getting Moi and the opposition to agree on a new constitution. At her garden party she made grand references to America’s constitutional history and told her guests to think above all of Kenya’s people.
