Wobbling and nobbling

The International Criminal Court judges on 15 July rejected an application by Kenyan Vice-President William Ruto to relocate his trial for crimes against humanity to East Africa. It looked as if the ICC’s position on the Kenyan defendants was hardening. Three days later, the prosecution suffered another blow: two more witnesses in Kenyatta’s trial withdrew. ‘Witness Five’ had recanted his testimony after learning of efforts to trace him. ‘Witness 426’ also withdrew, despite negotiations with Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda to persuade him or her to continue.
