Transparency's clear win

Anti-corruption activists are celebrating the introduction of tougher rules on corporate accountability. The European Parliament passed EU Accounting and Transparency Directives on 12 June, pressuring the Group of Eight meeting in Northern Ireland on 17-18 June. The Directives compel oil, gas, mining and logging firms to disclose payments above 100,000 euros (US$132,000). Brendan O’Donnell of the Global Witness Oil Campaign called it a huge victory for transparency and Kofi Annan’s Africa Progress Panel welcomed the move.
