A question of control

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention and its director, John Nkengasong, are in a turf war after winning praise for their leadership combatting the pandemic throughout the continent (AC Vol 62 No 2). The organisation has been so successful that the AU Commissioner for Social Affairs, Sudan's Amira Elfadil Mohammed, is bidding to bring it under her direct command, say sources in Addis Ababa. Some think jealousy at the Africa CDC's success is the motivation, others that it is a power play in the context of United States and Chinese 'Covid diplomacy'.
