Compromise in Conakry

Protests organised by teachers' unions on 20 February left eight people dead and more than 50 injured, said reports from Conakry. The protesters' demands for salary increases were the result of poor basic services and price increases, Cellou Dalein Diallo, head of the main opposition party, the Union des forces démocratiques de Guinée, told Africa Confidential. The protests ended after the government promised the unions concessions and on 27 February, President Alpha Condé sacked three ministers, including those for Pre-University Education and the Civil Service.
