Kagame is set to ignore all his critics, the US included, and persist with his authoritarian political and economic course

The United States declared itself 'deeply disappointed' at President Paul Kagame's January decision to stand for a third term in office, but he rapidly dismissed all concerns in a series of robust Tweets. Although President Barack Obama's displeasure is clear, he will not be in office for long, and it is very unlikely that the US will follow up its rhetoric with any serious sanctions. The 18 December referendum endorsed the constitutional change and in 2017, Kagame will win a third term in parliamentary and presidential elections. The change shortens the presidential term from seven to five years from 2024 but allows Kagame a further two terms, extending his rule up to 2034.
