The election gets messier

Two new alliances of opposition politicians are creating problems for President Ouattara's campaign

Once President Alassane Dramane Ouattara had announced last year that he would seek a second term, he was the clear favourite to win the election due this October, given the strengthening economy and the disarray among his opponents. That has started to change this year with dissidents emerging from within Ouattara's own camp, while his long-standing foes, the followers of former President Laurent Gbagbo, are regrouping. There are signs that Gbagbo, currently in a cell at the Hague awaiting trial for crimes against humanity at the International Criminal Court (ICC), is trying to guide some of his new-found allies in their campaign against Ouattara.
