West Africa's peacekeepers have at last cleared the decks for an election

The peace process known as Abuja II is moving unsteadily towards success. The goal is free and fair elections on 30 May. The main faction leaders now say they want to take part and have duly resigned from the interim, almost powerless, Executive State Council. Most of the militias have handed in most of their weapons to the West African peacekeeping force, Ecomog, under Major General Victor Malu of Nigeria. There is even progress towards naming a chairman for the Elections Commission – an especially ticklish task, since practically all the obvious candidates are seen as partisan.
