Trophy-hunters after Kikwete

The President comes in for a storm of criticism over elephant and rhino poaching but the true picture is more complicated

Embattled President Jakaya Kikwete has tried to fight back after coming under intense fire from the British Mail on Sunday newspaper and politicians at home and abroad over the slaughter of and trade in East Africa's wildlife. Seizures of vast quantities of ivory in raids around the world and at Dar es Salaam port by Tanzanian customs highlighted the issue and became global headlines around the opening on 12-13 February of the London Conference on the Illegal Wildlife Trade by Britain’s Prince Charles and his sons William and Harry.
