The recent failure of the Muslim Brotherhood-backed Justice and Construction Party (JCP) and its allies to remove Prime Minister Ali Zeidan – whether via a vote of the General National Congress or by engineering a coup – has resulted in political stalemate. While its loosely defined mandate runs until next February, the GNC is already incapable, undermined and divided. The government is still dependent on militias but hopes that that could change when new troops trained in the West become available. The JCP has 17 seats on the 80-seat assembly but is supported by 13 independents.
