Countdown in Addis

The actual 50th anniversary day of the founding of the Organisation of African Unity – the African Union’s previous name – turned into an embarrassment for the organisers. As Brazil’s President Dilma Rousseff, the first of ten world leaders scheduled, was about to take the podium on 25 May, Addis Ababa’s Millennium Hall was plunged into darkness. Some ten minutes later, the back-up generator kicked in and she addressed an audience that had dwindled to under 100, half of them journalists, the rest members of presidential entourages.
