Swearing deputies

Cyril Ramaphosa, the African National Congress’s new Deputy President, is finding that the smooth path to power that was promised him may be strewn with boulders. He agreed to become President Jacob Zuma’s deputy on the understanding that he would help usher him into the presidency. Now, however, ANC General Secretary Gwede Mantashe is challenging Ramaphosa for control of the governing party’s national leadership. As Zuma’s closest ally, he fears he may be eclipsed by Ramaphosa.
