President Banda remains favourite to win the elections but the ructions caused by his sons’ activism are chipping away at that margin of victory
President Rupiah Banda’s dismissal of his friend and campaign manager, Vernon Johnson Mwaanga, at the urging of his sons James and Henry, demonstrates their growing political weight in Lusaka (AC Vol 50 No 25). Mwaanga, a political ally of Banda’s for some 50 years, has been the main strategist behind all his electoral victories so far. Now, a new, First Family coterie is taking charge of the campaign for the presidency in October, even though friends and enemies alike think that will weaken Banda’s electoral appeal.
