Mubarak stumbles to the exit

As protestors and Mubarak supporters clash in Al Tahrir Square, the organised political parties are positioning themselves for negotiations

The fast-growing power of Egypt's democracy movement seems set to force President Mohamed Hosni Mubarak from power sooner rather than later, following the military's promise not to suppress the street protests against his regime. As predicted, the greatest threat to the ageing President comes from the streets (AC Vol 52 No 1). His offer on 1 February to stand down before September's presidential election showed how weak his position had become. Mubarak has steadily retreated, conceding more with each passing day while failing to appreciate the momentousness of events. On 31 January, he spoke of young protestors' 'noble' actions in pursuing freedom of speech being 'quickly exploited by those who sought to spread chaos'.
