Trafigura and the toxic waste

The United Nations Special Rapporteur on Toxic Waste, Okechukwu Ibeanu, is challenging claims by oil-trader Trafigura and its Ivorian subcontractor Tommy that the waste they dumped in Abidjan in August 2006 could not have caused widespread illness and the death of at least 15 people. In an unedited official report seen by Africa Confidential, Ibeanu questions Trafigura's claims just a month before the firm is due to defend itself against a class action in London's High Court by thousands of Ivorians claiming damages for the waste dumping (AC Vol 50 No 17). The Ivorian Health Ministry found 34,408 confirmed and 63,296 probable cases of exposure.
