Buoyed up by aid and trade, the party in power is sure that it will sweep the coming elections

With national elections due in December, President Armando Guebuza may feel he has achieved most of what he hoped for when he took office nearly five years ago. His Frente de Libertação de Moçambique seems impregnable, having rolled back the political pluralism and economic liberalism of his predecessor, President Joaquim Chissano, after the end of the civil war in 1992. Chissano's policies set Mozambique on the road to growth but Frelimo hardliners saw them as weaknesses that allowed politics, the economy and society to move beyond the party's grasp. No longer. Guebuza has not only satisfied the old guard. He has tried to modernise the economy and the government by a tough, top-down approach.
