Canvassing for investors, fighting elections, the region's leaders face a testing 2002

Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo's agenda this year will be crowded with primaries and positioning for the 2003 elections. Although there is no doubt that he wants to stand for re-election, he is yet to announce it publicly. There is debate, however, about whether Obasanjo will have to fight a primary contest to secure his party's presidential nomination again.Works Minister and chief political fixer Tony Anenih will be a dominant figure in 2002, running the primaries and sifting party nominations. Riven by factions, the ruling People's Democratic Party is still better run than the opposition Alliance for Democracy and All People's Party.
