Inevitable victory

As the challenges to the governing ANC fizzle out, people are asking what Jacob Zuma wants to do with power

There remains one main unanswered question about the elections due on 22 April : the size of the African National Congress’s vote. Most estimates put it at 55-65% and predict the ANC will win eight of the nine provinces, with the opposition taking Western Cape. The much bigger political questions concern the type of policies that the pragmatic ANC President, Jacob Zuma, will pursue and how he will balance his strong leftist support from the South African Communist Party (SACP) and the trades unions against the need to shore up the economy against the ravages of a worsening global economic crisis.
