Public inquiries into Kenya's electoral troubles offer a safety valve, not a solution

Two official commissions of inquiry completed their public hearings last week. The Kriegler Commission’s subject is electoral fraud in the disputed presidential election of December 2007; the Waki Commission’s is the nature of the post-election violence. Both were set up under the power-sharing deal of 28 February, brokered by former United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan, which returned a measure of stability to the republic following the election and have allowed the public and the political parties to air their many grievances.
